Otter Nonsense

When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was five I wanted to grow up to be an otter.

I saw no flaws in this plan, obviously. Life as a human was so dull, and I thought the life of a cackling aquatic mammal would be far more fulfilling. Carrying seashells around. Slipping and sliding through rivers and streams.

It wasn’t long before my little heart was shattered when a teacher told me that I couldn’t grow up to become an animal. I mean, she did tell me in order to stop me from announcing it at my pre-school graduation in front of all my peers and their families. So there’s that.

It was one of my first doses of harsh reality. Of realizing that something I want is forever beyond my reach. I have known now for two decades that my ambitions back then were otter nonsense, and impossible.

But I haven’t let that stop me from dreaming. 🦦
