Unseen

Yesterday, at the grocery store, a woman came up to me as I was perusing the salads and said, “I wish you could see your hair in the sunlight. It looks so beautiful.”

I hate grocery shopping. I only do it super early in the morning, right when the store opens. And I usually do it on my days off, so I don’t have to put much effort into my appearance. It’s usually a sweatshirt and leggings and a sloppy, frizzy ponytail.

I recently colored my hair blue-green. Which was a risk. I was navy blue for a long time, but this color was on cleance at Target, so I decided to give it a whirl. And I’ve been seeking a change. A change a little deeper than my hair color, but I thought that was a good place to start.

After she said that to me, my mood lifted. I decided to go on a hike after my shopping, so I could enjoy the autumn day. I tried a new drink at Starbucks. I cleaned my bedroom for the first time in too long. I made a delicious dinner. I reorganized my bookshelves.

Sometimes, all it takes is the kindness of a stranger to make your day a little brighter. And a little bit of a brighter day can do wonders for a weary soul.
