What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?
I know it’s a simple, and perhaps silly answer, but I wish I could dance.
I have NO rhythm. Truly unfortunate, considering I played violin for several years. Needless to say, I was not very good.
I took Square Dancing in gym class during high school. I should not have.
I used to (religiously) watch my VHS of Cats with envy, wishing I could dance like those quick-footed felines.
So, at formal events where dancing is featured, I keep myself firmly glued to my seat. The only time I actually danced at a wedding was after three cocktails and I do not remember it. I don’t think there’s photos of it, either. Which is good for everyone.
Any time, in high school or college, where my friends played dancing games (DDR, Just Dance, etc) I always sat out. I mean, I could have gone the “who cares what everyone else thinks” route and just danced badly without a care in the world, but my anxiety would NOT have allowed it. Because I knew I was bad at dancing, I never felt compelled to dance – my feet never grew restless at the first note of “Footloose.” I didn’t attend a single dance in high school or college, but I also didn’t like wearing dresses for years, although I have since gotten over that.
I have gotten a little better over the years. I’ll dance in the car when a good song comes on. I’ll dance in the comfort of my own home, with the curtains drawn, as I’m vacuuming. I can “sway” to a rhythm, to a degree. But I still, unfortunately, really cannot dance. It would be cool if I could bust a move, take folks by surprise at formal events, but my moves end up with me busting a knee or an ankle, half the time.
So, even if it’s a little boring, if I could have any ability, it would be to dance.
